Today I was talking with the handyman who takes care of my building, about one of my favourite jackets who recently got burned by a cigarette in the back. I told him “how do you think I plan to fix it” (my plan being of adding an horizontal strip all through the back).
He told me “you can sew an emblem of a rock band”. He thought it better, seeing at the jacket, and added “well, you should add two emblems”. The only way that the intervention could be understood as something complete, intended, and not a botch-up; as he later explained. It seems that two interventions in the same spirit generate an intention. The basic form of symmetry.
The passion (and full faith) for symmetry, abbandoned in the late 1890’s, is back with the currently hyped genetical-computer-generated design. But, has it ever been out?
